About LegalDeskAI
Why we exist, how we think about AI and law, and who is behind MAYA and SMRITI.
Why LegalDeskAI exists
Indian lawyers deserve tools that respect their judgment and their clients’ privacy. Most legal AI today is either a research demo or a generic chatbot with legal branding. We built LegalDeskAI to offer something different: private infrastructure where MAYA works as your AI agent across drafting, analysis, and SMRITI — your own RAG over judgements and documents — so you stay in control.
Philosophy on AI and law
AI should augment professional judgment, not replace it. We don’t train on your client data. We don’t sell your data. MAYA and SMRITI are designed to work inside your workflow — drafting, replying, summarizing, suggesting sections — so you can focus on practice while the tools handle the heavy lifting. We believe that approach is not only better for lawyers but necessary for trust in legal tech in India.
Founder story
I’m Kunjan Dalal, a software engineer since 2008 and an LL.B. graduate. I’ve worked across multiple languages and paradigms, spoken at conferences in London and Bangalore, and contributed to open source. I also know how frustrating it is to manage legal work without tools built for our system.
LegalDeskAI is my answer: a privacy-first AI platform for Indian lawyers, built with empathy for how you actually work. MAYA (Machine Assistant for Your Analysis) and SMRITI (Structured Memory for Retrieval, Interpretation, Traceability & Inference) are the core of that — an AI agent across all Quick Tools and a private RAG over your corpus, first in this space in India.
Advisory board
LegalDeskAI is guided by an advisory board of practicing professionals — from AI research and predictive systems to business analytics and scalable infrastructure. They help shape how MAYA and SMRITI behave in real work, not just demos.

LegalDeskAI has moved quickly from an idea to a working platform used by Indian lawyers in practice. A few milestones that shaped the product:
2025 — Private beta
Opened a private beta with a small group of Indian lawyers to test early drafting, analysis, and case-management workflows.
2025 — Public launch & free tools
Launched the public platform alongside free code converters for IPC–BNS, IEA–BSA, and CRPC–BNSS to help with the new criminal law regime.
2025 — Case management
Added structured client and case management so drafting and AI tools sit next to real matters, not in a demo sandbox.
2025 — MAYA & Quick Tools
Introduced MAYA as an AI agent across Quick Tools — from Quick Draft and Legal Opinion to Section Suggestor and Chat with Documents.
2026 and beyond
Deepening SMRITI, research tooling, and deployment options so firms can run LegalDeskAI on their own infrastructure while keeping client data private.
