Holding

The court held that the surrender period may be extended by eight weeks upon the petitioner’s deposit of Rs 25,000 and furnishing of the bail‑bond receipt.

Summary

The petitioner, Ravi Shankar Mahato, filed a petition seeking modification of an earlier order dated 10‑12‑2024 that limited the period for his surrender. The petitioner argued for an extension of the surrender deadline. The court considered whether it could lawfully extend the surrender period and impose conditions for the extension. It held that, in the interest of justice and procedural fairness, the surrender period could be extended by eight weeks provided the petitioner deposited Rs 25,000 with the District Legal Services Authority and furnished a bail‑bond receipt. Accordingly, the court modified the earlier order, granting the additional time and imposing the deposit condition. The modification petition was allowed.
