A writ petition becomes infructuous and may be withdrawn when the underlying offence is compounded before a Lok Adalat.

Summary

The petitioners, Vijay Kumar Chopra and others, filed writ petitions (Nos. 6443 and 6442 of 2025) challenging certain actions. Before the court could hear the matters, the alleged offences were compounded before the Lok Adalat. The petitioners then moved the court to withdraw the writ petitions on the ground that the matters had become infructuous. The court examined whether a writ petition can be withdrawn when the underlying criminal matter is compounded. Finding no impediment, the court allowed the withdrawal, declaring the writ petitions infructuous. It also listed the related criminal applications (Nos. 367 and 368 of 2025) for hearing on a later date.
